Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the youngest of three daughters of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. After her father died in the role of a carnival barker when Ruth was just an infant She was required to support the family working both as a cleaner and a server. Ruth was born in the poorest neighborhood in Boston Massachusetts where she attended school. She only attended school for a couple of years, then taking a break to pursue her acting career. This path was fraught with challenges. After obtaining a position at New York as a model for a detective magazine she found it difficult to get jobs on stage. The next position she was offered was the "hat check" lady at a club until she decided to quit and moved back to Boston. The New England Repertory Company was the first job she had as a regular actor. She earned money by performing during the daytime in the ushering department. She studied drama in The Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
